Metal Crafts


The metal craft industry in Nepal is run mostly by household units dusted around the city of Patan and most of them are Newars. Today, Nepal is the only country, which uses this known as “Cire Perdu” or “Lost wax”. At first the artist creates a desired image in wax using his expert hands and simple tools made is then evenly coated with special clay mixture and dried in the sun.


The production of metal figures in Kathmandu is estimated to be approximately worth about 3 million annually. But imports must of several units of hundred of designs of statuettes. Copper sheets, Zinc, Lead, wax, brass, coal; bronze wire, mercury etc. are used in the process of production.


The foreign countries U.S.A. and Taiwan are the major importers of the metal figure. Other major reporting countries of the metal figures are Denmark, France, Germany, Hong Kong, Japan, Singapore, Switzerland and the UK.
